Once Newton got DVA rolling, his new group forged close associations with Cabaret Voltaire and Throbbing Gristle, quickly matching TG's reputation for fearsome live sets. By the time they’d played three gigs, they'd been banned from three venues. The focus of our piece is on the first two DVA albums – released in late 1980 and early 1981– with fights, drugs, porn, constructivism, cricket, a missing person and a tragic death all part of the saga. The brainchild of Leeds promoter John Keenan, the event ran for five years, from 1979 to 1983, with the line-ups including Joy Division, PiL, Siouxsie And The Banshees, Soft Cell, The Gang Of Four, Simple Minds, Bauhaus, OMD, Killing Joke, The Sisters Of Mercy and Dead Or Alive, to name just a few. It's no wonder that John Keenan has some of the very best anecdotes in the music business. And with \u003cstrong\u003eALAN VEGA\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eKIM GORDON\u003c\/strong\u003e,\u003cstrong\u003e JUSTIN ROBERTSON\u003c\/strong\u003e,\u003cstrong\u003e KAYLA PAINTER\u003c\/strong\u003e,\u003cstrong\u003e KEITH SEATMAN \u003c\/strong\u003eand \u003cstrong\u003eANNIE HOGAN \u003c\/strong\u003ealso in the magazine's contents list, this is one issue of Electronic Sound you definitely don't want to miss. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eBoth of the tracks on the accompanying seven-inch began life on 'Thirst', \u003cstrong\u003eCLOCK DVA\u003c\/strong\u003e's acclaimed second album from 1981. The A-side is the original version of '4 Hours', their post-punk classic, an intense mix of mutant pop, tribal funk, eerie jazz and unsettling lyrics that's often viewed as DVA's signature song. It's backed by a 2026 update of the jerky 'Sensorium', with Adi Newton pushing the track in a more obviously electronic direction and sometimes edging into acid territory.
